British Airways is to launch a business-class-only
service from London City Airport to New York .
The twice-daily flights, beginning next year, will
be operated by BA mainline using Airbus A318 aircraft
with just 32 seats. The airlines subsidiary, BA
CityFlyer, already operates domestic and European routes
from London City .
Willie Walsh, BA chief executive, said: We will
offer a 15-minute check-in for customers in both London
and New York . London City s size means that it
is a quick and easy airport to use and, with a maximum
of 32 passengers on-board, getting on and off the aircraft
will be a smooth process.
Once on board, customers will experience all
the benefits of our business class cabin including a
fully flat bed.
The new route marks two firsts for London City : its
first scheduled transatlantic service and the first
using the A318.
BA has ordered two single-aisle A318s to operate the
route. They will be the first A318s in the airlines
fleet, although it already operates 69 A320 family short-haul
aircraft.
